This is just a heads-up on this new standard. This is for end-item DPMO only. The follow-on document IPC-9261 is at the proposal stage and will provide methodology for opportunties/DPMO for each of the manufacturing processes, as well as an aggregate index.

Calculation of DPMO and Manufacturing Indices for Printed Board Assemblies IPC-7912

Finally - an end to the confusion on how to calculate defect opportunities for benchmarking! For customers and manufacturers, it seems like every company has a unique way of calculating defects and then reporting on quality. In a complex electronics assembly operation, is it best to calculate from the number of components? The number of leads? What about solder joints? How can companies calculate best-in-class with an infinite number of ways of calculating Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO)?

A task force of industry representatives - from EMS companies, OEM manufacturing facilities, and OEM specifiers - put their collective wisdom together to provide the industry's first concensus document on calculating benchmark indices for defects and quality. The document provides consistent methodologies for calculating benchmark indices for DPMO Index, Component DPMO, Placement DPMO, Termination DPMO, and Overall Manufacturing Index (OMI). Both DPMO and OMI refer to a measurement taken on completed product. This document is for end-of-process benchmarking and it provides a definitive roadmap on "how" to arrive at the industry's most relevant DPMO related indices.
