     Hello,

There is no official european text but a draft directive , as we
understood, asking to ban lead and 2 Halogenated Flame retardant
PBB & PBDE but not all halogenated compounds (we can keep salt in the
     soup).

Regarding the lack of officiel label for Lead-free (in France we have
AOC for wine and cheese and need may be one for electronics).

There are only 2 way to quantify lead traces or by weight or by pin or
     joint.
For sure the most easy is to define by weigth
     so a lead free electronic component could be 5000 , 2000 , 1000 or
     500ppm
a lead free board could be...
     a lead free computer .....

In the other direction the lead free paste will be defined also in
term of weigth of remaining traces of lead.

The danger of such way is that exageration can lead to uncessary and
costly purity request .I like the Japanese way of the automotive
industry asking for 1/3 lead content reduction , then two third....

Due to that lack of definition of lead free we have decided in ST
Microelectronics to built our own specification defining what is a
lead-free component . We are now finalizing that spec before to submit
     it to our customers

         L.P.

Subject: [LF] Questions on leadfree and halogen-free

Hi,

I have some questions. Although they may be discussed before in this forum,
I am still not very clear about their answers.

(1) What is the exact deadline for banning lead usage in electronic products
in Japan, Europe and US respectively?
(2) How to define exactly a product lead-free, by percentage of weight in
the final products, by percentage of weight in the component/sub-system
level, or by lead-free manufacturing?
(3) What is current status on halogen-free? Does it have lower priority than
lead-free, or the same? How about legislation in Japan,EU and USA on
halogen-free?

I am working at a component manufacturing organization. I estimate that if
our components go to final products, such as a printer, scanner or PC, lead
percentage in terms of weight in a final product will be quite small.

Best regards,
