Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Here's my suggestion on your problem. I would contact Nat. Semicon. about
their LM158AH/883 low power dual op-amp in a TO-5 package, and ask them what
ESD classification (rating) is the unit. ESD classification, based on Human
Body Model (ESD STMS5.1-1998) is as follows:

Class 0 < 250 Volts             (Most Sensitive)
Class 1A        250 - 500 Volts
Class 1B        500 - 1,000 Volts
Class 1C        1,000 - 2,000 Volts
Class 2 2,000 - 4,000 Volts
Class 3A        4,000 - 8,000 Volts
Class 3B        > 8,000 Volts   (Least Sensitive)

The lower the class, the more sensitive the device.

Within your facility, suggest that you have your operators grounded when
handling the device. If the device is a class 0 device, you will have to
have ESD table mats, and ionizers present since class 0 devices could fail
just by looking at them (I learned that the hard way). If these devices are
prevalent in the shop, you may want to consider wearing ESD smocks around
them as well.

You're right when you indicate that precautions should be taken. The biggest
problem with ESD is that you never know if you're damaging the component
until it fails and an autopsy (failure analysis) is performed on the board
and device.
