Harold-
Your questions were answered. The hole serves a couple of purposes 1) as a
method for part present verification or count. and 2) for pusher pins inside
the feeder. The early days of feeders a pin would push the component to the
nozzle during component pick up. There was very little Z axis sensing. These
feeders could also be used with Paper tape as well. The paper tape has a
thin film that the pin can push through. Fuji in addition to Pannasert had
Pusher pin style feeders. This goes back to the mid '80s.
New Pressure sensitive tape or Surf Tape use pusher pins to separate the
component from the pressure sensitive tape. Surf Tape is good for small
components or uBGA's where centering and ball integrity are critical.

~What is the purpose of the hole on the bottom of the carrier tape for SMT
~components? Is there any advantage having it there?
