Have you considered solder columns? I guess they fall into the leaded
component category although typically you attach the columns yourself
instead of sending them out for S or J-lead attach. For many years (1984 to
1990?)ITT used the Raychem solder columns on tons of Sincgars military
radios. (It's my understanding that they converted to plastic many years
ago) However the same old Sincgars radios are still being built today in
non-US military applications using the same solder columns on LCCCs. We
purchased the technology in '98 and build the solder columns for many US and
non-US military customers now.
IDT and Xicor both build ceramic modules with several LCCCs on a ceramic
substrate without leads or columns and plenty of LCCCs are built that don't
get leads or columns. 20 to 32 lead is most popular however we see an
occasional 44 and 68 lead lot come through our solder dipping line. I think
it is safe to assume they are being mounted on low CTE materials. I might
be able to dig up some of the old technical (historical) documents on LCCC
board level reliability if you are interested.

Subject: [TN] LCCC Usage

Greetings,

Is anybody out there using leadless ceramic chip carriers in a military
environment without attaching leads? If so, what size are you using?

Thanks in advance for any information,

Bill Robinson
