Hello Gary. In the fixture business, we like to see .100"-.150" spacing
between the SMD and PTH. This gives us enough room to place a wall of
composite material between the two components, while still leaving enough
area around the PTH to have good soldering to the joint. If you are still in
the design phase of the circuit board, "ask for at least" .100", Preferably
more, this will allow for good solder flow to the component,PTH, while also
giving you the advantage of placing the circuit board in a fixture. I should
say, it gives you the "option" of placing the pcb into a fixture! This is
know as "Selective Soldering", a technique used with the major Contract
Mfg's of the world. The process of selective soldering, using a pallet or
fixture, helps eliminate the need of the gluing of SMD's to the bottom side
of the pcb, along with many other advantages. If you have any other

Subject: [TN] Design Rules; RE: Component Spacing
Would anyone know the minimum recommended distance of the lead from a
through hole component protruding through the bottom of a PCB and the
nearest component to ensure proper wave soldering on the leads without voids
or bridges??
