Cara,
Background: I don't know exactly what you mean by "IPC certified lab", but I
do know of labs that do SIR testing using IPC and Telecordia (communications
industry) specs. SIR is a type of corrosion test, as is copper mirror,
halide ion, and electromigration. Can you be more specific?

Answer #1 Unless you have internally set pass/fail criteria for the
individual circuit packs you have, then you are going to need to run the
usual comb pattern type of test coupons for which there are documented
pass/fail criteria set in the documents I have alluded to above. Most board
shops can produce these test coupons for you. CAUTION: make sure that it is
a good board shop or the coupons themselves may be crappy, even with no
flux! Some test labs will supply the coupons and include them in the cost
of the testing.

Answer #2 I know of three labs that could potentially do the testing you
require. They are:
1) IBM, Bromont, Quebec - Excellent lab, mainly focused at the component
level, but may have the equipment to do the testing
2) Celestica, Toronto, Ontario - Excellent lab, can definitely do it,
although they don't take a lot of outside work. You can call the Lab
Manager, Dr. Marianne Romansky, at 416-448-6284.
3) Materials Engineering and Environmental Lab, Nortel Networks, Belleville,
Ontario - This is right up their alley. They have been doing this type of
work for over 10 years. They routinely take outside work. Phone Bill
Blakely at 613-967-5319.

Subject: [TN] IPC test labs

Good day to everyone on this list!

Background: I am currently conducting a flux evaluation for a Wave Solder
process. I am testing many fluxes and would like to send the test boards
out to an IPC certified lab to have SIR and corrosion tests performed.

Question #1: Is it possible to have these tests performed on general
boards, or do they have to be IPC standard boards? If they must be IPC
standard, where can I obtain the boards?

Question #2: Are there any labs in Ontario (Canada) that perform these
tests? I have been looking on the net and all of the suitable labs are in
the US.

I am new to this field, any pertinent information would be helpful.
