Our plant has been using polyester coats with the 1% carbon suffused nylon for the past 18-24 months (my predecessor instituted the practice). All operators wear such coats. Last week I updated the ESD control procedure to require that at least two snaps be closed in front, which is more lax than many other practices, but some people had been flying around with their coats completely open. Some did not like the new requirement, but most were glad to know what they needed to do their jobs the right way.

Another new feature of the plan was requiring visitors to wear ESD coats. (There was a sign by the doors of the work areas, but no one was enforcing it for visitors.) If a visitor is called up to handle product, the protective actions required of operators will apply to the visitor as well.
