Goran,
Yes, they are banned in the State of New Hampshire for about two
years now. Autopsyies (sp?) of dead loons showed that they were eating the
sinkers from the floor of NH lakes. Further analysis showed that the
mechanism of death was that the lead killed the gizzard of the loons, and
thereby somehow caused its entire digestive tract to stop functioning.
Loons are fairly specific to New Hampshire lakes, and it is
recognized that the effects of this ban may not be seen for many years. But,
like banning lead in gasoline, one has to start sometime. Lee Wilmot,
HADCO

Subject: Re: [LF] Implementing lead-free before the (new) deadline

I just heard an interesting report on NPR (National Public Radio) about Pb
sinkers being used by all the anglers - fishermen out there who use them to
get
their hooks deeper into the water. Apparently, a lot of them are lost and
they
harm birds and fish, who swallow them (especially the small ones) and get
lead
poisoning. This is aside from any other issues of the lead sitting in the
water. There are alternative tin or other sinkers, but they are more
expensive
and not as heavy.

Does anyone know if these are banned anywhere in the world? Just curious.
Thanks,
Goran
