The basis of the hilarious contributions was that the ban of lead from electronic solders is purely based on political gains and emotional feelings. So, the value of the contributions is still there in that, again, they show the need for a thorough
ECO-impact study before politicians (mis-)use an issue for their personal benifits.
No one in the world has presented a proper environmental life cycle assessment of tin-lead solders and their alternatives up till now. It might well come out that the alternatives are worse than the original, but no one can tell before the data are
available. Decisions should be based on the outcome of such a study. Nevertheless, legislation is in preparation and this has forced us worldwide to work very hard on lead-free soldering, spending enormous amounts of effort and money.
Isn't there any society in the world that can take on this task of a life cycle analysis, and bring this everlasting discussion to an end??!! An end where political decisions on technical issues will be made on the basis of sound and solid technical
data rather than on emotion and a few votes more.

Regards, Erik

I for one would appreciate it if messages like Brian's and Werner's were
kept off this forum. The intent here is for "professionals" to discuss the
susbstitution of lead in electronic based products. I for one am not
interested in having my mailbox filled with misguided political opinions and
backslapping.
Please direct such comments to a politically oriented environmental
listserve and spare us your "insight".
Thanks
