hi,

i may be mistaken, and this wouldn't be the first time, but i believe that 'acid traps' are locations where traces make turns that are 90 degrees or less. the concern is that the trapped process solutions may accumulate at the inside radius of these turns and cause conditions like over-etch. if your board fabricator doesn't care, should you?

Subject: [TN] What is an acid trap?

I have a question that you can hopefully help me with. Recently, our
manufacturing plant reviewed one of our designs and identified several areas
that contained acid trap situations. Can you give me a good definition as to
what an acid trap is and what damage it could cause to a board? After I
reviewed the design, I did notice quite a few areas that might be a problem.
Before I fixed anything, I sent the files to the board fabricator that does
our production work. They performed their normal checks and found no
problems. They then reduced the criteria that they search on and again,
found no problems. I need to respond to not only our manufacturing people
but also to the engineers involved with this design as well as management.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...
