Anti static tape is more than cosmetic. Standard tapes generate a static
charge when removed from the roll. How are your tapes used in your
facility? Do they endanger an ESD sensitive part or assembly? Appication
of a standard piece of tape to a ESD sensitive device, even if the charge is
neutralized by ionization first, is only allowable in some cases, if the
tape is never removed. When removed, a large charge may be generated into
your part or assembly. In this case ionization is of no use as it will
neutralize the charge after the damage has been done. If your ESD control
lprogram calls for no static generating materials at the work station, you
are in violation of your own procedures. Can you give some more details on
the uses of tape in your facililty and the protective measures in effect?

Subject: [TN] antistatic tape

TechNetters,

I'm reviewing and revising our ESD control procedure. The last person to do
this put in a statement that we would use only anitstatic tape in production
areas. However, we do have static generating tape commonly used in
production areas.

I'm asking myself and colleagues, do we want to keep that statement about
antistatic tape in our procedure? If so, we need to start using such tape.

Is antistatic tape a good idea, or just a cosmetic feature? Thanks for any
comments. Lou Hart 412-858-6184, QA Compunetix
