Tom,

IPC-2221 has a guideline; section 4.6 says "Liquid screened markings
require clearances that are typically 0.4 - 0.5 mm from solderable
surfaces." 0.016 to 0.020" is typically a lot for the dense boards we do
today.

FYI: Mary Sugden and Mona Johnson did a 5-part article on PCB marking in
Printed Circuit Design, from 11/96 to 3/97. Therein they give a summary of
clearances (12/96, pg 45, under Summary), where they say 0.010" for premium
boards and 0.017" for standard. Good info in the series.

Hope that helps...

Was wonder if anyone can point me to the IPC spec which specifically states
how close silk screen marking on a printed wiring board can be to land
areas?

Thanks,
