Hi Steve,

Congrats man, supplier site visits. Cool deal.

Taking or getting their copy of 1710 would be fine. We don't use it but
then we're covered under 55110. Your best assets are your two eyes and the
assembly problems you've worked through.

The biggest question I want answered is, 'How did bad boards make it out of
their shop?' (Bad boards defined as outside specification. Did you get
what you paid for?) Second, I want to be convinced their manufacturing
operation was robust enough to address those concerns in the future. Third,
attitude of the staff, engineers and management to your visit. They should
be partnering with you to provide the best product possible.

Don't worry about not being a board guy. It helps - you can ask any
question, included loaded ones and claim novice status to get the answer.

Hans

Subject: [TN] OEM Standard for Printed Board Manufacturers'
Qualification Profile

Hi ya'll!

Well, today, I just got "volunteered" to do something. I'm a SMT Process
engineer here where I work, but got "volunteered" to go and "visit" some of
our board vendors (the ones that we have experienced a little trouble with).
I'm not the board buyer here, nor am I in purchasing, but I've been
"volunteered" to do this anyway...but that's another story.

Me, not being real experienced in this, I went to the IPC web page and
downloaded the IPC-1710 - OEM Standard for Printed Board Manufacturers'
Qualification Profile to use as a "guide" or starting point when I go on
these "visits" so that I don't look like a complete moron. However, after
reading through the standard, it looks to be very thorough and doesn't leave
anything out. There will be some areas in there that I will have to become
more familiar with to be sure.

But my question (and I'm trying to get a feel from the fab guys on this);
how
would you take someone like me coming to your shop with the IPC-1710 in hand
to look over things?

Just curious is all...
