Matthew, Michael
MS Word can "save as HTML" but the resulting files tend to be huge, which
will slow load times and make those in our community who manufacture disks
very happy. It may be a good starting point but I wouldn't recommend it.
FrontPage is a fairly painless way for an existing Microsoft Office user to
get stuff on the web, and (in conjunction with Michael's point 4 about IIS)
can generate ASPs to put data into Access. But as Michael says, there are
lots of others out there.

And if you are really getting into it, check www.bignosebird.com for lots of
tips on designing web pages. Strange name but I highly recommend it.

My $0.02 worth: Intranets are the way to go, extranets (VPNs) even better.
1. You could do worse than get a book on the subject: Institute of
Management's
"Successful Intranets in a week" (Hodder & Stoughton) is a good
introduction,
available in the UK.
2. Much software these days can publish for the web -- MS Word, etc. "Save
as
HTML", though I make no guarantee as to quality of resultant pages.
3. If you want to create pages from scratch, get an HTML editor. FrontPage
or FP
Express are most common, DreamWeaver probably the most professionally
accredited.
4. If you want to run database applications off the web, you'll need MS
Internet
Information Server to run Active Server Pages. This runs in NT only.
Contact me privately if you want more 'info'.
Mike

主旨: [TN] Off topic - Intranet based modification database?

|Hiya folks, now I know that this is not quite on topic but...
|
|My company has finally succumbed come to the idea of 1 company = 1
|MODsheet, so that anyone wishing to make a change to anything
|be it mechanical or electronic, they're to use a single mod sheet
|instead of per department & many systems running around the factory.
|
|Now as I have created several MSAccess97 databases for similar items I
|am sticking my oar in.
|
|What I am looking for is suggestions on creating an intranet based
|database that is accessible by all though an internet browser.
|So that anyone can create & edit a record, run a query etc
|
|It goes without saying that we do not want to spend a lot of money on
|new software,
|(especially when we probably have the software, but just need to write
|some HTML/VB code).
|
|Has anyone any experience of this sort of system in their company?
|(Come on Steve G, where do I go to find this out?)
|
|Many thanks :-)
