You can make a pretty good white noise generator yourself by turning on your Tele  or radio and
pulling the aerial  (antenna) out or tuning to a non existent station. Hard to see how this
would rationally make any [positive]difference to the actual measured noise on the shop floor.
Maybe this is the occasion when you should try this at home..

But perception is what we are talking about not objective measurement.   The only use I know of
for white noise in this sort of context is trials done with tinitus sufferers: noticeable
improvement has been reported by sufferers of this condition by playing low levels of white
noise directly into their ears.Maybe your colleague has read of this or something somewhere.
