Greg,

If you have a book called, "Surface Mount Technology: Principles and
Practice" by Ray Prasad it has several pages where it addresses cost factors
for SM.

Of course migration from TH to SM is mainly centered around reduced real
estate and more 'power' in less space. You need to be aware of the fact that
in some cases this may not be a good enough reason to go that direction. It
all depends on the factors for the product.
