Presentation:

"Lead-Free Soldering - The Current Status of Legislation Efforts & Materials
Development "
Mr. Don Reed, Alpha - Fry Technologies

With the increased drive from the European community, it is assumed that
lead-free soldering will require timely
implementation in the United States to allow product sales outside our
shores. With this, the assembler is
squarely faced with the challenge of keeping up with the process and
equipment changes required to support
these new materials, whatever they may be. Though far from settled, certain
directions are being taken as we
move forward. This presentation will cover the following topics:

- Current status of existing & proposed legislation in Europe and US,
including any challenges to legislation.
- Current status of 'materials (alloys) of choice', and how they compare to
Sn/Pb in terms of cost, environmental impact, etc.
- Overview of any US mfrs. currently using/implementing lead-free at this
time, along with challenges faced.
- Current status of component manufacturers implementing lead-free
terminations.
- Future outlook/where do we go from here?

Don Reed works as a New Product Development Manager - Solder Paste for Alpha
- Fry Technologies in Jersey
City, New Jersey. His position involves working with solder paste customers,
and the Alpha - Fry R&D and
manufacturing groups in turning their processing needs into product
realities. Don has an undergraduate degree
in Industrial Chemistry and a Master in Business Administration.
