I worked in detail developing microvia (1-6 mils) fabrication with lasers.
If this is your range, I've used a Nikon that had a zoom lens and fiber
optical light.  I don't know the model number, but it was a very good
optical microscope.  The key is to be able to get close to 500X (10X eye
piece times the objective).  You won't see barreling very easily because of
the line of sight unless you cross-section.

For larger vias, any run of the mill set up should work.
