Mike, I cannot quote chapter and verse, but I can tell you what I have
learned about this subject in the last 36 or so years.
1.) Flux dipping should never exceed 1/2 of the stripped (exposed) stranded
wire.
2.) Flux should be no more active than type "R".
3.) Tinning should ideally be as close to one wire diameter (including
insulation) from the insulation as possible. (Called the insulation "GAP".)
The insulation "CLEARANCE" is the "specified" allowable distance between the
insulation and the termination solder connection. (Some people and specs.
get the terms all screwed up (GAP and CLEARANCE).
All of the above come from recomendations of the numerous schools and
certification courses that I have taken including A10905300 (NASA/Saturn),
NPC-200 (NASA), NHB 5300.4(3A-1)(NASA), MIL-STD-454, MIL-S-45743, WS-6536,
DOD-STD-2000, MIL-STD-2000, MIL-Std-2000A, MIL-P28809 and etc.
These are the principles we have been teaching
operators/technicians/inspectors since about 1965 and it has been
successful. Where can you find it in print, I haven't the foggiest. It works
for us!

Subject: [TN] Wire Tinning Specification

Where can I find the workmanship standard for fluxing and tinning of
discrete stranded wire (specifically gap from end of tinning to insulation)?
IPC-A-610 only covers installation of wire into a PCBA, and I need 'chapter
and verse' on tinning to quote to a subcontractor. TIA for your help....
