Hi,

We manufacture a special component in a ceramic package. The original runs were
housed in white ceramic packages. The package is leadless and our pnp vison
could not recognize any distinguishing features for lack of contrast. We now
have tested and approved a dark grey/nearly black material that works much
better.

All of that is to say that one can get "alumina" material that is not white.
Whether or not the BGA's makers may use anything other that white, I do not
know.

We have also found that some pnp vision software is not capable of recognizing
bga balls, no matter what color anything is. Although you have probably already
done this, you might check with your pnp supplier to be sure of it's
capabilities.

hi,

not all alumina packages are white. we use many alumina packages that are
brownish. you may say that there is something other than aluminal in these
packages that make them brownish, but the fact is that in this industry, when
you say a package is alumina, it doesn't mean it's white.

Subject: [TN] Color of ceramic BGA's

Hi Technetters,

During acceptance testing of our new pick&place machine we ran into a
problem: the vision system can't see the solderballs on the white ceramic
substrate of our Topline dummy-CBGA's. It's just not supported.
I have never used CBGA's in our production, and I was wondering if real-life
CBGA's can have this same color.

Kind regards

Daan Terstegge
