As an SMT assembly AOI user my group has had the same experience with
component variability and templates. The equipment we use has the option to
teach alternate components (machine will compare current image to a list of
known good models and require only one match to pass) which provides some
relief to the constant tweaking. New variations still cause problems but
are captured in a central library for use later. Personally I always
thought the ability to use OCR in templates would be a valuable tool in this
situation, but I have never used a system with this capability.

Regards and good luck,
Brad

Subject: [TN] AOI and component marking

Hi technos,

and especially you, SMT assembly AOI users.

Yes, we bought an AOI machine and have it up and running. The problem is
that with each reel changed on the p'n'p machines, the writing on the
components changes and the templates have to be readjusted. Is it natural?

The component engineer cannot impose font and alignment requirements so
we're stuck with tweaking the programs intensively.

Is this a problem that everybody has? Is this machine dependent and we chose
the wrong one? Are we not knowledgeable enough to do the right programming?
Any tricks to get better results?

Thanks,
Ioan
