We also allow water drinking water under certain circumstances. The
containers must be spill proof and must never be on the surface of the work
station. Also, in some areas such as our clean room, it is not allowed at
all. What we allow is for the worker to have a drink container on the shelf
underneath their bench. Therefore, when they want a drink they have to push
back from their bench to get it. Being that it is under the bench, there is
no chance for it to spill onto any assembly. This removes the likelihood of
contamination.

We "get around" the J-Std-001 and 610 requirements by allowing this in our
internal process spec that is referenced on the drawing. Requirements listed
on an approved drawing will take precedence over requirement in the J-Std or
in 610. I agree that these should be requirements in the J-Std as that way,
the only way around the requirement is for a manufacturer to have specific
instructions that detail the deviation, and that instruction must be on an
approved drawing or otherwise listed in the contract. I wouldn't want to see
drinking allowed without some controls.

My $.02 worth.
