Hi, Stephen,
I heard that you can damage your eyes if you wear those generic glass's all the time or use them as inspection / protection tools. My understanding is if a company requires you to wear them ( safety glasses ) , then they pay for them. And you can get 20-20 glass that won't give you head-aches or bad vision. So only temporary help could have to wear want I would call throw a ways.
But maybe I don't know what I'm talking about I've wore glasses from the time I was 10 years old and I hate all of them. If I could see without them I would love to never put on another pair.
I did work at a company that would aloud you to stay in the walk ways without safety glasses. But that didn't last long because as always you have those people that will not obey rules.
Good Luck
Nancy T.

Hey Ya'll!

I know this is gonna' be one of them questions that I'll probably regret
asking, but what the hey, I'm gonna ask anyway...

Our plant like others I've worked at, require that we all wear safety glasses
when on the production floor. I know that they do provide protection...I've
read the stories like many of you have; "I was doing this and all of a
sudden, POW! a lead clipping (or solder splash, whatever...) hits me right in
my safety glass lense! Thank goodness I had my safety glasses on!"

They do work, no argument. But I think there's a time and place for
everything. Safety glasses take some getting used to especially if you don't
normally wear glasses, and there hasn't been a pair that I've put on that
didn't have at least a little parallax when looking through them. If I want
to really look close at placement on a 0402 or something like that, I'll
slide them down to the tip of my nose and look over the lenses so I can see
things clearly.

My operators are starting to really complain now because there's been a real
crack-down on making sure everybody has their safety glasses on. They have
the same complaint that I have, when you need to see accurately looking at
very tiny objects, the glasses are a hindrance...in my opinion.

Does anybody else my view? Or am I just being a "whiney-butt"?

I think that there are places that safety glasses should be worn, I have no
problem putting them on when I'm around the wave solder, but I don't think
they should be required in surface mount. "But...but...Steve, the machine
could fly apart and someone could get a eye put out!" If that's the case, I
should put my glasses on when I go to the breakroom and microwave some
popcorn...the darn thing could blow up and put an eye out.

Are there any of you out there that have designated areas that safety glasses
are worn and other places on the production floor that they're not required?
Or is it always a blanket rule that no matter where you're at on the
production floor safety glasses are required...

I know I'm gonna regret this...
