Jason:

A very inexpensive way of measuring coating thickness can be done using a
tool called a "wet film gauge". Once the viscosity of your coating
formulation is established, typically verified with a Zahn cup, coat your
board or sample and measure the thickness of the "wet"coating with the
gauge. Allow the sample to dry, then re-measure the coating thickness with a
micrometer. You should end up with a conversion table for your own coating
which will basically show that when you spray 8 mils thick wet, you'll end
up with 5 mils dry. The advantage to this method is that you can determine
while coating your board whether or not you'll have adequate coating when
finished. The use of an instrument to determine coating thickness after the
coating is dry and cured may be too late too add or subtract coating from
the board that you are spraying.
