IPC/EIA J-STD-001C has passed industry consensus ballot with a great response. Of 188 companies that make up the joint IPC and EIA balloting committee, we received 135 ballot returns. 125 voted YES (85 users, 19 suppliers, 21 general category-consultants, trainers, laboratories) and 10 Abstained (4 users, 1 supplier, 5 general). All previously submitted NO ballots were changed to either YES or ABSTAIN through the comment resolution process. It has been submitted to ANSI.

Congratulations to the committee and to IPC National Standard for Soldering Task Group Leaders Teresa Rowe, AAI Corporation and Jeff Koon, Raytheon Company, and to the EIA Soldering Technology Committee Leader Mark Kwoka, Intersil Corporation, for their tremendous effort in completing this entire process in just 25 months start to finish.

The committee's focus was to improve understanding or the criteria that has been in J-STD-001B all along. A special effort was completed with the support of the leaders and members of the IPC-A-610C task group to resolve conflicts that had been identified between the two documents. This will make it much easier for manufacturing facilities to standardize their operator and inspection training. It also makes it easier to work to both of these standards in the same facility. Most of the illustrations are now in full color to improve understanding, and the requirements are clearly explained within the document instead of having to refer to separate tables.

The document is off to the printer and expected to be in stock and available for purchase the week of March 13. We will be introducing it at APEX - IPC SMEMA Council Electronics Assembly Process Exhibition and Conference that week in Long Beach. There will be a full day interactive Tutorial (T-11) on Sunday March 12 that will provide an overview of J-STD-001 and an in-depth look at the recent revision. More information is available at www.apex2000.org

You will be able to place advance orders AFTER MARCH 1.
