Hello Dennis,
I noticed that you didn't receive any responses. So, hopefully I'll shed a
little light from my point of view.
Active components are anything that requires power to be supplied to it to
operate.eg most ICs, amplifiers etc.
Passive components, as their name suggests, operate passively, do not need
a supply voltage to operate. eg. resistors, capacitors, inductors, fuses,
crystals.
Discrete components are singular, resistors, capacitors, transistors,
diodes etc.
Integrated Circuits are a combination of many discrete components in one
package. They may be active or passive.
The line gets fuzzy with such components as power FETS, that use arrays of
FET structures to increase their power rating, but I'd generally consider
these as discrete components.
