I do not see how it would improve things - or am I missing something?

A cleanliness check using some form of ionic tester is only a monitor of the
performance of your process and only measures ionic contaminants that it can
get at. It cannot detect non-ionics that have been proven to be a major
contributor to circuit failures. New ionic test systems don't really do it
any differently or necessarily any better. I do concede however, that a
static tester will do the job far quicker.

So it would surely be more appropriate, as you move into finer pitch/width,
COB devices and greater miniaturisation, to take another look at the
potential reliability of your end product. This would be better done using
either new SIR testing or Ion Chromatography testing specs. / systems that
are now available.
