Amstrad (brit consumer products company) anounced an email type phone thing, c/w built in
address book etc and thermal fax / printer ability. I recall the announcment, but not seen the
product anywhere now I come to think of it. I'll have a poke about if you like

I also remember the price of this device made it seem a bit of a nonsense as it was going to be
a few hundred Pounds. Ie not a million miles from a proper PC price and certainly much more than
a secondhand PC which would still have better functionality even if it was a lowly 486.
Secondhand 486 with 28k modem are in our local secondhand computer shop for <£100 with a new
cheapo printer at £70 in the posh shop round the corner. Would be perfectly adequate for text
Email, even a bit of surfing.
Dunno what you pay in OZ for kit, but overall this phone mail thing seemed a lot to pay to save
the space a PC would take up in other words so I forgot all about it. Cos I suppose it is a
little less frightening to think about using than a whole PC.

Dunno about your free providers, but Yahoo and various places do netbased mail if that's what
you're asking.

Mike
