It's defined by the area under the normal distribution curve. The easiest
way is to use a set of tables where this is calculated already. So subtract
your 800 ppm from 1 million, 999200, express this as a decimal 0.9992, then
look up the tables to find this and the related sigma value is 3.16. There
is a formula to calculate the area under the normal distribution curve for a
given sigma, but I recommend the tables.

Is there a formula one can use to come up with these numbers?  E.G. if my
process yield last month was 800 PPM, can I crunch that number and say we
were at 4.8 sigma?
