IPC Standard 2221 (formerly 275) gives charts for this.
Specifically Figure 6-4, A and C. Depends upon if
these traces are internal or external and how much
degree rise allowed in the trace (how much the
trace is allowed to heat above ambient).
Just my observation, best to go by the
charts, but roughly it goes like this:
For the same cross sectional area and degree rise
of a specific trace, an external trace can handle
roughly twice the current of an internal trace.
Examples:
External: 400 sq. mils w/10C rise ~ 10 amps (Figure A)
Internal: 400 sq. mils w/10C rise ~ 5 amps (Figure B)
External: 150 sq. mils w/45C rise ~ 10 amps (Figure A)
Internal: 150 sq. mils w/45C rise ~ 5 amps (Figure B)
