Well , dear rampinc,
I think we'll split it 50/50 here ; there are as good or bad merits, pos &
con .
Patenting rollin' wheels is a full stop crime ; can opener makes sense,
and if one company is buying cloning patents excluding thus anybody else
from getin on the boat;
that is definitely very much for a debate (as presently happening) .
When it comes down to whole globe taken ransom just because some guys ride a
wave (or cash cow);
one can not be surprised whole nations give finger to software, etc. hot air
ballons;
and hack copies by truckloads and anarchy sets in .
Some patents run 20 years !
And as both Ryan and yourself said ; it's companies rewarded ; the pitiful
engineers bonus is
seldom a long running royalty .
Patents quite likely stopped as much progress as made .
Know dozens of inventions promptly killed by yourly named too (Netscape
slipped by accident, not for long)
But you have a point about resources . Defendability (especially cross
border is zilch) is poor and expensive,
and notion of gross chicks tramplin' and peckin' small just because of days
ahead or whatever murky else advantage does not appeal to me.

Go ahead ... ? cheap shot : not so difficult to invent ; to commercially
realize it IS another matter .
Hope you're informed enough as to know who invented Windows (give yo a lead,
not ms).
Guess why we still burn stinkin petrol (lack of "inventions" on GM part?).

Duno if to laugh or cry

Lets bury this item ; sorry i started it with Ryan.
Was meant as a joke (which it is, we all pay) , not edged ethical debate on
shallow base .

It is strange to see an engineer putting down the patent process. If a new
idea or
concept is not protected for the benefit of the inventor (person or a
company) by
patents, why one would spend time and resources developing better
processes,
materials, design and software. Patents made this scientific and engineering
progress
possible.

Every engineer should be proud to invent a better mouse trap and be rewarded
for it.
Patents make money, both for the individuals and companies. Look at IBM, TI,
Motorola,
Intel, Dupont, Sony, GM to name a few. Many of their patents are cash cows
and brings
loads of money.

Go ahead, invent something useful, you may like it.
