Phil,

I agree with you.  I've always liked to put the legs out where the solder can hit
them.  You can still get some solder skips in this orientation, due to the height of
the body on  these parts.  We have found that skips will go to zero if you can get your
design guys/gals to length those pads a bit on the backside parts.
