Hello TechNet,

Here's another one of those specmanship things that has two different
organizations in our company at odds.

The overall question is should J-STD-001 apply to internal connections of
transformers and magnetics?

J-STD-001, Paragraph 3.2.1 says, "This standard is very limited in its
applicability to the manufacturing processes associated with the mounting
of internal electronic elements and the soldering of the internal
connections of transformers, motors, and similar devices. Unless a user has
a specific need for the controls provided by this standard, it should not
be imposed relative to the manufacture of the internal elements of these
devices. The external interconnect points (i.e., terminals, pins, etc.)
must meet the solderability requirements of this document, less steam aging."

Sounds pretty straight froward until you read the J-STD-001Handbook,
IPC-HDBK-001. Companion paragraph to 001, 13.2.1 and subsequent paragraphs
go into great detail about magnetics manufacturing including 13.2.1.4,
Soldering Magnetic Wire Splices. It says, "Soldered connections involving
magnetic wire splices SHALL meet the requirements of the Standard."

All that said and going back to my original question (solderability of the
leads aside), do I impose 001 on my transformer supplier for internal
connections or not?

Thanks in advance,

Ken Bloomquist
