How old is your "Tar" archiver?
The "Tar" archiver (cannot remember its name) is quite old, and hence
may not be too compatible with
current 32 bit OS's and Y2K. Is it a "DOS" program or have they upgraded
it to a decent Windows version?
It is does not "ZIP" the file either.
PDF documents compress very will with PKZIP, WinZip or EasyZip type file
compressors.
