Ken,

IMHO, I can think of two possible reasons why they are suggesting gold.  One
is, depending on your board design, that they do not want to subject the
board to the thermal shock of the HSAL finish.  The second is that with the
high aspect ratio of your holes they might have trouble holding the
tolerances you are asking for in a HASL finish.

 I was suggesting HASL but our backplane house want Gold plating. No fine
 pitch parts are on the board. Any obvious reasons for asking Ni-Gold plating?
