A question of semantics. Is N the 2nd most produced chemical in the USA? 
If I buy a cylinder of N2, the contents are obtained by the fractional 
distillation of air; this is not a "produced chemical" because the raw 
material is there, anyway.

Even the building block of nitrogenous compounds, ammonia, is made by 
reacting hydrogen with atmospheric nitrogen.

I therefore maintain that elemental nitrogen is not "produced" because 
it is all around us as a diatomic gas  and appeal to EQAB that they 
ensure the questions are better worded. :-)
