Matthias,
Not all parts are stored in N2 or vacuum bags. We use desiccants too, depends on what components and for how long time they are supposed to be stored. As all such storage costs money, we try to make a resonable selection. Expensive 400 lead packages with only one supplier is one example on a component that is stored in N2. So it's a landscape, from easy made decisions to headaches. Some components were so bad that they had to be re-tinned by us before storage! Let me make it clear: we hate all this and are much more alert today when buying components. German components, never a risk. American components are often from the East, look up! True american components, little problems. English components, from best in the world to worst in the world. What I say is not strictly based on statistics, just what I remember from many meetings, investigations and production disaster discussions, so don't do like jk (jumped 3 feet high), smile instead and stretch your hand after the IPC vol!

umes, call the wetting balance man in your Incoming inspection organisation, put read lines under your plating requirements in the specs, and lean back with a satifactory sigh....if the bulk material is OK, the barrier reliable and the Tin or Tin/Lead is metalurgically OK, then I think there is no half-year or one-year limit, roman Lead tubes can still be seen intact after 2,000 years!

Just curious, did you (or anybody ot there in TechNet) make any
good/bad experiences with long time storage of such parts not in
nitrogen or vacuum bags but in boxes with regularly
replaced/refreshed desiccants?

Thanks,
Matthias Mansfeld
