If the customer requests the addition (modification), you can (and should)
inform them of the 610 guideline. Then if the customer says go ahead - your
covered (get the approval in a fax or e-mail for the file). Customer
requirements always come first.

Subject: [TN] IPC 610 Interpretation
Good afternoon all,
We have a rework situation in our facility. Here goes:
We have a gull wing component that we have to add a large
through-hole
capacitor lead on to one of the IC leads. Per the 610 requirement,
12.2.5.5, solder may not touch the body of the component of a gull wing
component. Because this is not a normal build situation, is that a
requirement that has to be met? It is very difficult to solder this large
lead on to this small lead, making a solid connection, without getting
solder between the lead and body of the IC. I realize the 610 is a
guideline for us to make decisions.
So......... In your opinion, what would you do? Rework, accept as
is,
.....
I realize the final decision is between us and our customer, but
would
like to hear what others think aobut this.
Thanks,
Connie M. Korth
