Hi, Jim,

I'm intrigued to know how you identify a part as being Moisture Sensitive
other than reading it off the Data Sheet from the manufacturer. Are you
carrying out a lot of expensive independant testng on a lot of parts?
Responsibility for determining the moisture sensitivity of a component, and
of ensuring correct labelling/packaging of MSD's lies with the OEM.

You should not have to specify for yourself what the packaging standard
should be, as you risk conflicting with the OEM's packaging standard. If
your distributor is keen to abide by your PO requirements, he may decide to
re-pack components to your specification, in which case.you could wind up
in trouble if someone gets something wrong like labelling information or
packaging type.

I have not heard yet of components that were once Moisture Sensitive
suddenly losing their sensitivity (unless the package type has changed from
plastic to ceramic, for example). Manufacturing process improvements could
lead to reduced sensitivity, but sensitivity is basically dependant on the
materials used to construct the component, and not on the manufacturing
process. If you're being told that "a part is no longer Moisture
Sensitive", I would be suspicious that my original information regarding
its sensitivity was incorrect. Similarly, if you're getting parts in marked
as MSD when you didn't expect them to be, you may have missed something in
your design assessment. Some components (new types of capacitor, for
example), are starting to come into the "moisture sensitive" categories,
much to everyone's surprise, but I can't comment on whether they're new
versions of an older, previously-non-sensitive part number, or completely
new part numbers.

I go back to my original question - how are you determining which
components are moisture sensitive in your design assessment?

Peter

Hi everybody,

Lately we have had a few problems with moisture sensitive part precautions.
During the design phase, a part is identified as moisture sensitive. The
purchase orders are then modified to include packaging/labeling notices
identifying the moisture requirements. Then, when the parts are received,
some are properly packaged and labeled and some are not. In all cases when
we contact the supplier we are told that the part in question is no longer
sensitive [component assembly processes were changed, etc] or we have parts
come identified as sensitive which were not when we created the design. So
the $1000 QUESTION is, do you try to identify moisture sensitive parts on
your design documentation or do you rely on your supplier to properly
identify and package sensitive parts and just handle them accordingly when
you receive them???

We have had a number of discrepancies, and I was wondering what everyone
else does to avoid this kind of thing. As always, thank you in advance for
any help you can provide.

Have fun,

Jim Jenkins
