Sometime ago, Bellcore published a study on copper oxidation: "The Surface
Composition of Copper with Indoor Exposures Ranging from 3 to 49 Years"
Schubert and D'Egidio, Corrosion Science 1990. They found that the copper
corrosion is similar to aluminum, to first order it passivates. After about 40
years the oxide thickness is only about 0.4 mils. Although the an indoor
environment was used, it was none the less, very aggressive!
