Lou, we used to have the same callout on our PCB's coming from out contract
Manufacturers. Over a couple of years ago we changed over to labels, which
give us the ability to change information, such as Rev status caused by an
engineering change (not that that ever happens). We have boards that are
conformal coated and the coating just covers the label and keeps it in place
and is still legible. We us a Brady thermal transfer label maker with there
THT labels and have been very happy with the results. Some of our outside
vendors use different Manufacturers Label makers but we have not seen any
different results with any of them. I like the Brady label maker because
the software used to run it is very easy to use and easy to teach an
operator.

Subject: [TN] Labeling of PC boards

TechNetters,

Here is a low-tech question. I have a customer who has been calling for
printing of board numbers, revs, serial numbers using epoxy ink. This
operation is time consuming, messy, prone to human error. We've been
talking about using computer-printed paper labels instead of epoxy ink. The
environment these boards go into is not particularly benign. Some are used
in train cars. They get an acrylic conformal coating.

Has anyone had experience in the matter of label durability? Any test
methods to suggest? Thanks for any comments.
