Susan,
based on my knowledge, the SMT adhesives are normally epoxy base (thermoset
type, not move after curing)...If you see the adhesive got inside the crack
of a resistor, is it possible that coating material of resistor (the
resistor should be caught by electrical testing from the vendor) or coating
material of the assembly get into the crack?  (thermal plastic adhesive
normally are not used as SMT adhesive, not to my limited experiences)

...However, if someone is using curing SMT adhesive and reflow in one step
(as cost saving measure...I heard about this...didn't like it a bit)....it
is possible to get cracked during the modified process.

The other place to look is the pick and place machine.  It could crack the
resistor upon placing...You will have the SMT adhesive fill up the crack at
placing time (it is liquid form at that stage..).
