The industry has lost a captain.

Gene Toomey, of Nashua NH, passed away Tuesday night.

I met Gene ~early 80s, when he was growing his fab shop ICI,
where fine lines were done long before they were practical,
because in Gene's words "We didn't know that it couldn't
be done". His shop was acquired by Algorex, a major design
shop who integrated into manufacturing. There he served as
the New England regional manager, where he serviced major
accounts with a mix of high density and deep analysis still
not common in the industry today. After some years,
he left Algorex, taking a role in a fast growth non-tech
business, and later took the role of President here at
        Applied CAD.

He was the SBA's New Hampshire Small Business Man of the
Year in 1984, and had been teaching business and entre-
preneurship at New Hamshire and Daniel Webster Colleges
in the Nashua and Portsmouth area.

Gene touched many lives, and gave many folks their entry
into the technical or business worlds. Although he always
proclaimed that he'd "rather be lucky than good", my belief
remains that he was indeed, both.

His perspective, wit, and ability to find the real issues
in any situation were both a joy to work with and made for
        many treasured friendships.

There is to be a wake on Friday, at the Davis Funeral home
on Lock Street in Nashua NH. Hours are 2-4 and 7-9pm, with
a funeral service at the same location on Saturday at 10am.

Friends desiring to make contributions in his memory should
send them to the American Cancer Society, c/o Pat Tranovech
Volunteer Memorial Chairperson, 2 Wren Court #6A, Merrimack
        NH 03054.

Applied CAD is establishing an award in his name to benefit
the library at New Hampshire College on an ongoing basis.

Gene was one of my favorite people, and he's already missed.
Now, if only I can follow his directive, "Stop designing!"
