Comments to the attached note:

Electrolytic plating requires the application of external current to
the part, while electroless plating doesn't (the chemistry is such that
it will plate on a catalytic surface).

So, electroless plating becomes interesting when there is a push toward
higher performance or miniaturization because, in addition of saving
real estate on the card by not having commoning bars, less noise will
be introduced in the systtem at higher frequency because of such
unwanted metallurgy. With electroless plating to be used as the surface
finish method, the laminate doesn't need to be designned with this
additional concern of being able to carry the current to all features.

In the Electroless Nickel-Immersion Gold process, why is the Nickel
 electroless (as opposed to electrolytic)?

 Thanks for the information!
