There are many :
1
The planarity (flat for devices requiring close placing tolerances) of
fine pitch and for BGA's ,
as you mentioned

The applications where it is sufficient (low end of contact frequency)
to avoid any selective or more expensive gold deposits ;
like plug & forget commercial cards with "gold fingers"

As my versatility favorite performing all above + the switching
functions via carbon pills mounted on silicon pads (most of mobile and
other phones, alarm pads; etc.) ; where we life tested the No. of switch
cycles over a million without impairing the resistivity and integrity of
the plating .

Correctly utilised the application is most versatile, clean, and cheap
