I have done it both ways and have found no true anomalies between nitrogen or
non. However, in reflowing downhole, oilfield type stuff, I found great benefits
in nitrogen inertion. We had to reflow with fairly elaborate solder alloys
(80%gold, 20%tin) and on polyimid substrates, and the absence of oxygen made for
very nice robust, less grainy solder joints. As far as immersion silver is
involved, does thirourea prove to be a problem? Or is this just in Omikron White
Tin? Also, does nitrogen inertion have an effect on presence or severity of the
thiourea?

Yes we are currently running without nitrogen double sided reflow and wave
solder Immersion Silver. No problems noted on 9 assemblies run so far. We
are using both Alpha Level Silver and Mac Dermid finishes.

Subject: [TN] Immersion silver

Hello, we are currently using nitrogen when reflowing our circuit
boards. Our circuit boards are silver immersion coated. We are trying to
reduce the amount of nitrogen that we are using in our plant and we are
looking to see what other manufacturing plants are doing. We would like
to shut off the nitrogen in our reflow ovens. Is anyone reflow soldering
(with no nitrogen) immersion silver plated boards with double reflow and
subsequently wave soldering in shadow fixtures?

Thank you,

David Kasica
