I am **so** tempted to say that a component hole has a component leaded
stuffed in it and a via doesn't but that doesn't really answer the question.  As
the terms apply here, a via is generally smaller than a component thru hole.
Not always but usually.  We do use component holes as vias if need be.  And
some of our older boards were laid out for alternate assemblies and have
components stuffed in vias if in the correct net.

Other than that, I don't think there is a difference.  Anyone care to set me
straight?
