We routinely (?) microsection 6-7 mil holes.
These are targeted with a drill to align sections for
multiple mounting.

Samples are ground to be able to just touch barrels
with 320 grit and then into the center of the holes
with 600 grit. This works, but the 600 is done with
incremental observations.

For smaller holes, 1200 grit paper is needed because
the 600 would be to agressive and remove too much stock
at a time.

So the same equipment is used, but with a little modification
to the grit size so you don't blow right by the centers.
