Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz answer:
The Question:
This element has a FCC crystal structure. This element is critical in the
Space Shuttle main rocket engine. The human body requires 50-120 mg of
this element per kilogram of body weight. Native element nuggets as large
as 400 tons have been found. Which element is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Copper (Cu)! Most metals reflect all visible wavelengths of
light at 90% efficiency or better with the reflected light being the same
color as the incident light. Copper reflects red light at 97.5%
efficiency. But green and blue light promote the electrons to a higher
energy level sometimes resulting in a two step decay and our eyes do not
detect as many blue and green photons in the reflected light as in the
incident light for copper (only 2/3s of the green light and 1/2 of the
blue light is reflected, the rest reflects as infrared light). This is the
reason our brains think that copper is a reddish color!
Many folks guessed nickel as the element but the human body requirements
are different than those listed. Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise
Solutions gets to put Clumpy to work.
So far Clumpy has:
Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)
Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing
Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- Solderability testing and mowed the lawn
Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel
Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- unknown
Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- unknown
Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys
Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- Cleaned gutters and painted window trim
Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
- unknown
Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits
- unknown
Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs
- descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch!
Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation
- assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit
Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions
- Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg!
Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi
- conducted a plasma pre treatment Taguchi DOE for a sealing process
Week 14 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted with a tin pest investigation/test
Week 15 Bev Christian, RIM
